Omen Recovery Guide
So you've lost your phone? Omen is here to help. If you haven't already, do a remote-install and come back here!
Command Overview
To control Omen, it's easiest if you use another cell phone, such as a friend's. Simply text (SMS) a command to your number with "omen" in the message body, followed by the command.
I don't have access to another phone! Can I use email?
What do you want to do?
Have my phone text me its location
Have my phone make a bunch of noise
Have my phone show a button to call me
Have my phone call me right now
Have my phone show a custom "lost" message
I found my phone!
Getting your phone's location
Send "omen location" to your phone. It will respond with the latitude/longitude of the phone, as well as a handy link to Google Maps you can use.
Omen will also turn on GPS location when activated. For more accuracy, request the location again after a few minutes to give your phone time to lock GPS.
Setting the callback number
Send "omen callback ####" to your phone, replacing the #'s with a phone number, such as your friend's phone or your landline. Omen will display a button on the phone
that says "Touch here to call owner". If that button is touched, your phone will dial the number you set here.
Note that this works even if your phone has a keyguard with a pattern or PIN set, easily enabling someone to call you.
Making noise
Send "omen noise" to your phone. It will play a random series of very annoying tones at maximum volume for around ten seconds.
Making your phone call right now
Send "omen loudcall ####" to your phone, replacing the #'s with a phone number, such as your friend's phone or your landline. Omen will immediately call that number from
your phone and enable the speakerphone at maximum volume.
Show a custom "lost" message
Send "omen show (message)" to your phone, replacing (message) with something you want to appear. By default, Omen simply displays "This phone is lost!".
Offering a reward in the show message may increase the chances of getting your phone back!
Excellent! I'm glad Omen could help out. There are two things you should do now:
1. Uninstall Omen! If you leave it installed, other people can text commands to your phone to make it do
annoying things and reveal your location. You can always remote-install it later if you lose your phone again.
2. Consider a donation. I released Omen for free to help make it easy when dealing with the stress of
a lost phone. If it found your phone for you and you want to keep clever guys like me out of conference rooms (ugh, meetings!),
then kick in a fiver by hitting the button below. A bargain to keep a nice Android phone, I'd say!
I don't have access to another phone!
Fear not, pretty much every cellular network supports email-to-SMS. For instance, a T-Mobile USA phone can be sent an SMS message
by emailing yourphonenumber@tmomail.net. Check on the Internet for your carrier.
When doing this, keep an eye on your junk/spam folder. Many mail services will not trust the response from your phone, so Omen's
replies could wind up there!
